Town of Smithton - Circa 1910

The road beside Middle Island Creek is the old Northwest Virginia to Parkersburg Turnpike proposed by George Washington. It was completed in 1836. The house of Joseph Bond, is beside the railraod station. The house and most others along the Creek were washed away in the 1950 flood. There was about 10 feet of water on the railroad tracks.
