Apr 15, 1875 - May 23, 1966 T.R. (Thornton Russell) Whiteman is a large part of Elkins, West Virginia history. He is the son of Edward Taylor Whiteman and Catheriner (Carroll). He was born in the South Branch Valley between Romney & Moorefield, where he did his apprentice work. In 1905, he and his wife Martha Cecelia (Gank) Whiteman came to Elkins. Here he built 149 residents, having designed 104 of them. The first was for W.H. Mason (1905) on Railroad Avenue in Elkins and the last being for Delmar C. Harper of Seneca Roicks in 1943. Mr. Whiteman built some of the most beautiful homes in the Elkins area, including the Kump Mansion, The Grand Theatre, the Smith building, Elkins City Hall, Randolph County Jail and part of the WV Childrens home. |
