Preston County, WV

Preston County is located in northern West Virginia containing roughly 864 square miles. Preston County was named in honor of Virginia Governor James Patton Preston 1816-1819. Kingwood serves as the county government. The county is home of Coopers Rock State Forest, Cathedral State Park and the Monongahela National Forest. Kingwood has a cool summer climate, which makes it a popular tourist attraction. Industries include tourism, poultry, coal mining, timber and farming. The Cheat River offers great water sport activities.

The annual Kingwood buckwheat festival is held every fall and offers hundreds craft vendors, car shows, livestock shows and carnival rides.

Preston County operates the Hazelton Federal Prison which employees many residents of the county
