Mineral County, WV was established the same year West Virginia became a State in 1863. Fort Ashby was established in 1755 by order of Col. George Washington. Fort Ashby is the last remaining fort that still stands from the French & Indian era.

Keyser is the county seat with Potomac State College located near an old Civil War Fort. Railroad industry helped establish the city and played a part in Keyser's history during the Civil War.
