Getting out and enjoying the fall colors is something nearly everyone can do. Auto touring allows you to pull over and stretch your legs, take a whiff of the autumn leaves and leave the everyday hurry behind. New England is famous for their fall colors, but West Virginia has the same colorful trees without the crowds! |
The Elkins - Davis Tour - 80 miles. (Early October - Mid October) From Elkins, traveling east on US 33. A four lane highway until you reach Bowden. Bowden has a National Fish Hatchery and the Cheat River Lodge. Road turns into a 2 lane road across the mountains. Excellent curvy road. You'll cross Shavers Mountain, Middle Mountain and then Rich Mountain. There are several places to pull off and enjoy the views. Next, you'll enter the small community of Harman (gas/snack stop). Make a left onto State Rt. 32 toward Canaan Valley State Park. Rt 32 eventually makes it's way to the Canaan Valley Plateau. Before you get to the top, making a left onto Rt. 72 will take you along some beautiful farm country through the Red Creek area. This road eventually leads to Parsons. After the Rt. 72 intersection is a road to the right (County Rt. 45) Lanesville Rd, which leads you to the Dolly Sods Wilderness. There are several gas stations and restaurants are located in Canaan Valley. Route 32 goes through the valley, onto Cabin Mountain and slowly desends into the town of Davis. Davis has a nice bicycle shop, t-shirt shop and a really good pizza shop on the right hand side of the road. I believe it's called Siriannis. County Rt. 29 (to left) leads to Blackwater State Park, which has a beautiful views of the Blackwater Falls, Giftshop, cabins and picnic area. Rt 32 goes through Davis and Thomas. In Thomas, Make a left onto Rt. 219 South - toward Parsons. The drive between Thomas and Parsons should allow some good views of the wind mills located on Backbone Mountain.
