Copperhead Snake in WV

The Copperhead snake is the most common poisonous snake found in West Virginia. Our other poisonous snake is the Rattlesnake. (sorry, no picture).

Although Copperhead's venom is rarely fatal, it is still a serious injury.

If you're not sure if the snake is a copper head, a few ways to identify them:

  • Their pupils are not round. See above. They look like cat eyes.
  • Their head is much wider than regular snake. Most snakes heads are almost the same width as the body. A copper head looks like the mouth is stuffed. (see below).
  • The copper head doesn't try for a fast getaway. They try and lay still, hoping they blend in with grass and leaves.
