Blueberries in the yard

Raising  Blueberries

Super easy to grow and they take - just a few square feet per plant. You can purchase them online or at a local nursery. We don't recommend Walmart, as they generally carry the worst plants. Blueberries do so well in WV, that you can almost ignore them. Our naturally acidic soil is perfect for blueberries. Remember to plant at least 2-3 different types, in order to pollinate each plant. Takes about 5-7 years before you start picking by the gallon.

Prepare the ground by making sure their is little competition (roots) with your new plants. I would get your new bed ready during the summer.  Loosen soil to give the roots an easy time growing in the fall. I also put some old boards, logs, firewood... anything that will eventually rot. This does 2 things, adds good nutrients to the soil and it keeps the ground damp.

Note: Birds like them, so you should try and pick batch every day, if possible!
