Barbour County is located on the Allegheny Plateau and drained by the Tygart River. The county was formed in 1843 and covers 345 square miles. Philippi is the county seat and was settled in 1780 by Richard Cottrill and Charity Talbott.

The community was originally known as Anglin’s Ford and changed to Booths Ferry. It was later renamed Philippi in honor of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Philip Pendleton Barbour.
The first land battle of the Civil War started in Barbour County on May 28, 1861.The Philippi covered bridge was built in 1852 and used by both sides of the Civil War. The Carrolton covered bridge is also located in Barbour County.
